What if the MBSR session has started, can I still join?
If there is still space, I allow new participants to join up through the second meeting. Once the course has met twice, no new participants are brought in; if this has occurred, please contact me for information about the next course time.
What is required during the course?
In order to get the most out of the course, both regular attendance of the classes and regular work with the material between classes is required. Home practice might take the form of practicing one or more of the mindfulness meditations, or applying mindfulness to daily life situations, for instance, practicing "mindful eating" between classes. Bringing mindfulness to our daily activities does not take any more time than not being mindful of them. Practicing meditations do take time and its important to make this a priority during the class, which may include re-prioritizing your daily activities to find minutes during the day. As someone recently said, "If you have time for Facebook or Twitter, you have time for meditation." Likewise "if you can breathe, you can meditate." Support and ideas for finding time for the home practices is available during the course, however, it will still require your commitment to make this happen, and your own strong determination. The goal is simply to share the teaching to those willing to learn.
Teacher FAQs
Why should I work with Jim?
I am a teacher who will offer you unconditional support and encouragement in your work to improve your life. While I invite your confidence and trust, you also have to trust yourself and make an informed decision. I happily offer free consultations to see if we can work together. I have been both a student and teacher of MBSR for several years, and Vipassana Meditation, Thai Buddhist and Zen Meditation, and also a student of yoga. I would teach yoga but I have tight hips, so my teacher tells me! But still I try. In addition to being a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in MD I am am also a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) through the National Council on Strength and Fitness.
I have learned and continue to learn from some of the best mentors and teachers in the country (and Canada), Char Wilkins, Trish Magyari, Susan Woods, Dr. Patricia Rockman, and Alan Goldstein, as well as Pete Kirchmer. I have completed training as well with Mindful Schools to deliver Mindfulness in Education with Argos Gonzalez. I am a qualified teacher of MBSR and an mPEAK Coach-in-Training with the University of California San Diego School of Medicine's Center for Mindfulness.
